Herbert C. Jackson

We just happen to see the Herbert C. Jackson docked in Lower Harbor on our way through town after driving up to Harvey. I stopped to take a few pictures while it unloaded coal.

The Herbert C. Jackson is 690 feet long, has a beam of 75 feet, and a per-trip carrying capacity of 27,776 tons. It's Capacity per foot of draft is 1,416 tons.

Defining Terms:

Length—defines the overall length of the ship. Some lengths are defined as the length at the water line, but on this site it is defined as the overall length.

Beam—width of the ship at its widest point.

Per Trip Carrying Capacity—measured in tons, it is the maximum amount the ship is designed to carry. Most ships are built to carry a big enough capacity to make the company a profit balanced out with the amount of money it will take to power the vessel to its destination and support the crew.

Capacity per foot of Draft—Draft refers to the part of the ship from the bottom to the waterline. Measured in tons, it is the amount of cargo that can be loaded onto the ship in order to make that size vessel sit one foot lower in the water. When a vessel is loaded full to capacity it will displace the water and sit lower by several feet.

Poe Lock—One of the Locks at Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. It is the biggest of all the Soo Locks with a length of 1200 feet and width of 110 feet. Many of the Lake Ore ships can only use this lock because of their sheer size. The Poe Lock (don’t say this out loud) is actually the second one of that name having been completed in 1968 to accommodate the larger ships. The first Poe Lock dates back to 1896.
